Air Conditioning Systems In Vehicles

March 31st, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

Sky high petroleum prices, the recession and the threat of unemployment means that most drivers are looking for ways to decrease the amount of fuel they use in their cars. There are various things you can do to lessen your fuel bills that will not include any expensive modifications to your car. In fact, it will not involve any modifications at all.

One of the first things to understand is that fuel additives do not work. None of them have been proven to work. On the other hand a well tuned engine will run at its maximum fuel efficiency. This can most easily be incorporated into your car’s annual service.

Another way to save fuel is not to accelerate quickly or brake abruptly. Try to drive smoothly and stay under 60 miles per hour. Fifty-six miles per hour is the most economical driving speed for many modern cars.

However, the simplest way of saving money on driving your car, is to turn off the air conditioning system altogether. You have probably already noticed that your car is less responsive when you have the air conditioning running. This is because your car’s engine is powering the wheels of your car and the air conditioning system. In other words, your car’s engine is driving two motors at the same time, dividing its resources.

Therefore, you should avoid using your car’s air conditioning system unless you really have to have it. Opening the roof light is a good alternative, which will not create too much draft. The extra sun light is invigorating as well. I personally like to have my window down while I am driving, although I am conscious that it can be very drafty in the back of the car if you have passengers there.

If you do not have rear passengers and you do not want too much draft anyway, you can open a rear window in order to lower the temperature in your car.

A vehicle’s air conditioning system is a boon if you can afford to run it, but it is also an superfluous luxury if you need to save some money on fuel. Some statistics show that a car’s air conditioning can cost anything between 5% and 10% of your fuel costs, if your are driving slowly in the inner city. Less if you are driving fast on the highway.

Turning off the air conditioning is the simplest and easiest technique to save on your fuel bills. Many auto cooling systems still have fans and very powerful ones too. There is no need to swelter just because you have turned the car’s air conditioning off.

Improving Your Home Air Quality During The Winter

With the arrival of winter comes the difficulty of keeping your home clean and fresh air circulating. Your home air quality suffers during the wintertime. Each person and pet living in your house is affected by the diminished air quality and asthma sufferers experience increased symptoms during this time.

However, there are some steps you can take will reduce the amount of dust and dirt in the air of your home. This article will provide some detail about how to make your home air quality better and help you to realize how important it is.

Increasing the humidity in your air is the first step you should take. The hot air from central heat dries out the moisture in the air and this greatly reduces the quality of the air. The warm air dries up the pet dander, dust, and other minute particles that imbed themselves in your carpet and floors, causing them to be released into the air. Of course, this means that you now will inhale these particles, which is not good for you. A humidifier would drastically reduce the amount of these particles in the air during the winter.

Opening your windows periodically during the winter will also help to improve the air quality in your home. Granted you will not want to keep them open, but for a few minutes every few days would allow some fresh air to circulate through the home. Some studies suggest that our homes are much too airtight. The quality of the air suffers for this. By opening your windows for a few minutes periodically, you can let in fresh oxygen and let out radon. Of course, you want to hope that you do not have radon, but that is another subject entirely.

Using an air purifier is the most efficient way to improve the air quality of your home. Air purifiers have come a long way and no longer the equipment that was loud and just blew the dust around your home. They are equipped with HEPA filters that dramatically reduce the airborne particles in your air. If you own pets then this is an even better reason to own a home air cleaner and to run it for the greater portion of the day. HEPA air purifiers are capable of removing particles down to 0.3 Microns. This is much smaller than the size of most viruses and bacteria found in the air.

Winter adds additional work to cleaning your home and your home air quality suffers because of this. Of course, there are some things that you can do to improve the quality. Opening the windows and letting in fresh air, using a humidifier and a home air purifier are all ways to improve the quality.

Best Air Purifier Devices

February 4th, 2010 Phillis Booker No comments

When my wife and I acquired our first home just over last year, we found ourselves having problems sleeping at night. The previous owners were heavy smokers and that lingered throughout the house. Since we moved in in the winter months, we were not able to have our windows open and the lack of clean air would cause us to get sore throats and stuffy noses during the night. So we looked into buying a air purifier.

Air cleaners that do not have filters are called as filterless air purifiers. Filterless air scrubbers are as effective as the air filters with filters. Almost all of the filterless air purifiers do not use fans. They work on different technologies. Using filterless air scrubbers is beneficial, because they save your money that you may have to spend on buying or replacing the air filters. They’re divided into four major types, according to the methods used. In these air purifiers, dust particles are drawn inside the purifier by fans. These particles are later charged with some high voltage wires, which later get attracted to electrically charged electrostatic metal plates. Many of these air scrubbers produce ozone as a spinoff. There are no filter or fans in the photocatalytic air filters. They appear to be a single coated florescent light bulb. In the photocatalytic air scrubber, ultra violet light causes metal semiconductors to produce oxidants. These oxidants are able breaking the molecular bonds, that exist in the micro-organisms. They remove even little dust particles, chemicals, and odours present in the air. They also are called as UV air filters.

The Holmes air scrubber draws in air from the room and runs it thru the filter, cleaning out any dust, mold, etc. We ran the purifier all winter and it kept our room smelling fresh until it warmed up enough for us to open our windows and air the room out absolutely. While I am sometimes content with the Holmes Air Purifier, I will admit there are some things I’d change about it.

I already mentioned the noise factor with the hepa vacuum cleaners. The Holmes purifier runs much louder than I anticipated it to. We managed to become used to it after a while but I know there are some folk that doubtless will not be able to. The second problem I spotted may very well be because of the cigarette smoke that was in our room but we found ourselves having to switch the filter much more frequently than the book claimed we would need to. This would not be a huge deal but HEPA filters are not inexpensive.

One other thing I spotted about our room when we were running the Holmes air scrubber was, even though the air was surely much cleaner, it appeared to be drier too. Whenever we run it for a serious length of time, I’ll nearly always wake up in the middle of the night with a nose bleed. I really had to start running a humidifier at the same time to fix this problem. Check out my facebook login site for more content.
