Air Conditioning Systems In Vehicles

March 31st, 2010 Owen Jones No comments

Sky high petroleum prices, the recession and the threat of unemployment means that most drivers are looking for ways to decrease the amount of fuel they use in their cars. There are various things you can do to lessen your fuel bills that will not include any expensive modifications to your car. In fact, it will not involve any modifications at all.

One of the first things to understand is that fuel additives do not work. None of them have been proven to work. On the other hand a well tuned engine will run at its maximum fuel efficiency. This can most easily be incorporated into your car’s annual service.

Another way to save fuel is not to accelerate quickly or brake abruptly. Try to drive smoothly and stay under 60 miles per hour. Fifty-six miles per hour is the most economical driving speed for many modern cars.

However, the simplest way of saving money on driving your car, is to turn off the air conditioning system altogether. You have probably already noticed that your car is less responsive when you have the air conditioning running. This is because your car’s engine is powering the wheels of your car and the air conditioning system. In other words, your car’s engine is driving two motors at the same time, dividing its resources.

Therefore, you should avoid using your car’s air conditioning system unless you really have to have it. Opening the roof light is a good alternative, which will not create too much draft. The extra sun light is invigorating as well. I personally like to have my window down while I am driving, although I am conscious that it can be very drafty in the back of the car if you have passengers there.

If you do not have rear passengers and you do not want too much draft anyway, you can open a rear window in order to lower the temperature in your car.

A vehicle’s air conditioning system is a boon if you can afford to run it, but it is also an superfluous luxury if you need to save some money on fuel. Some statistics show that a car’s air conditioning can cost anything between 5% and 10% of your fuel costs, if your are driving slowly in the inner city. Less if you are driving fast on the highway.

Turning off the air conditioning is the simplest and easiest technique to save on your fuel bills. Many auto cooling systems still have fans and very powerful ones too. There is no need to swelter just because you have turned the car’s air conditioning off.

How To Find The Perfect Light Bulbs For Your Space

March 30th, 2010 Pedro Strovalinski No comments

After all the time you have spent decorating your home, it’s not always wise to think that any light bulbs will do the trick. Taking time to learn what different bulbs can do to brighten your space will let you enjoy your home even more.

The new compact fluorescent bulbs can be a good decision for your home. They come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and wattage’s to accommodate nearly any home. In addition, they last for many thousands of hours and will actually save you money on your energy bill during their lifetime.

Remember though, that although they will save you money in the long run, the initial purchase is more that traditional incandescent light bulbs. They also do not work with dimmer switches that many people have installed in their homes.

Another option is the halogen bulb. They give a much stronger light and do produce a small energy savings. They are more expensive than either CFL’s or incandescent bulbs and require specific care when installing.

For starters, you cannot handle the glass that bulb is made from. To do so allows oils from your skin to touch the glass which weakens it. This weakening results in a reduction in the life of the bulb. Something else to take into account is that they get extremely hot and have been known to burn skin or even cause fabric to burst into flame.

No matter the bulb you choose to buy, the wattage directly affect the amount of light produced. Consider using a different wattage for different areas of your home. You may not like dining by the bright light of a halogen bulb. You should also consider full spectrum incandescent light bulbs for a more natural lighting spectrum to highlight art or in a craft area. Take care to choose the right light bulbs for your home before you make the purchase.

Find deals on light bulbs by looking online. There are tons of light bulbs that you will find at wonderful prices. Head online today and save money.

Picking The Right Pressure Cooker

March 29th, 2010 Eric J. Griffiths No comments

It is not surprising to find that a pressure cooker is sometimes an item of debate when deciding what to buy for the kitchen. Trying to decide whether or not to go with stainless steel or aluminum could cause any couple to go running for help. Despite looking and behaving much the same, there are differences between the two types that should be looked into.

In 1679, Denis Papin prepared a large meal for members of the Royal Society, in which he showcased his invention, a predecessor of the pressure cooker. It was of cast iron, called the Steam Digester, and able to turn beef bones into jelly in a surprisingly short time, according to an eyewitness. Though rather dangerous and unstable in its original state, sophistication in design and manufacturing have made pressure cookers relatively safe and efficient. These modern “digesters” continue to do what they do best: cook food quickly.

You may find the choice to use one simple, however, which one of the two is more effective? Defining what is effective, and more to the point, what you are looking for from your cooker, is the key to finding an answer to this question.

Stainless steel is, well, stainless and steel. It will not tarnish or rust, and with proper care, can last many years. Generally, the stainless steel cookers will have bottoms that are worked with layers of copper to ensure even heating. Though stainless steel cookers are sometimes more expensive than their aluminum counterparts, they seem to be more forgiving with lapses in care.

Many cooks swear that stainless steel pots cook food better. According to some, the fact that stainless steel is slower than aluminum at transferring its heat may have something to do with it. Food is less likely to stick to the bottom of the pot because of its stainless nature. Quality and sturdiness are generally given as the reasons for the preference.

However, the ability to prep foods, such as sauteing and browning, seems to be another often overlooked reason for selecting the stainless steel cookers. Because of their stainless nature, none of the sauces or browning vegetables stick to the bottom, allowing the cook to use the pot. This way he or she doesn’t have to change from one cooking utensil to another.

Pressure cookers made from aluminum generally have less mass than the others. Also, aluminum cookers do not need a copper layer, since their thermal conductivity is quite high. Being a cheaper element to get, aluminum affords a manufacturer with a way to cut cost while making a quality pressure cooker. Making a good quality aluminum pressure cooker may have other costs that can shrink this advantage, however.

For a large pressure cooker, the weight difference is much more noticeable. A cook moving a fully loaded pressure cooker may find the task daunting with a stainless steel version, while being able to more easily handle an aluminum model.

Despite differences, modern pressure cookers have several safety features. Stainless steel and aluminum versions can be found with three independent safety valves which allow excess steam to bleed off and relieve the pressure in the pot. Many also come with a device that keeps one from being able to remove the lid while it’s still under pressure. Maintaining the cooker clean and free of debris, whether around the valves or even the gasket, will help keep the cooker safe for a long time.

One must chose their own way when it comes to deciding on a pressure cooker. The consumer must do a little researching and balance his or her needs with what the pressure cooker, stainless steel or aluminum, has to offer. Despite the years of change and innovation, the pressure cooker is still considered a cheap and effective way to cook healthy food quickly.

Searching for the best aluminum or stainless steel pressure cooker for your kitchen can seem like a daunting task. If you are having a hard time deciding what to purchase, you really can’t do better than a Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker.
